Welcome to HBMA Skating Programs– Where Skaters Begin and Grow
At HBMA, we offer a complete skating journey for all ages and skill levels from toddlers as young as 3 years old to adults discovering the ice for the first time. Our programs include Learn to Skate, Sharpen your Skating Skills, Intro to Figure Skating and Power Skating, providing a clear path to grow and thrive on the ice. Whether you’re taking your very first steps or refining advanced techniques, our expert coaches are here to support and inspire every stride.
Our mission is to create a safe, fun, and inclusive environment where skaters of all backgrounds can develop confidence, skills, and a lifelong love for skating. Start with us as a beginner and progress at your own pace through our variety of engaging program because at HBMA, there’s a place on the ice for everyone.
Skating Programs
Offering year-round recreational programming is essential to the community as it provides consistent opportunities for individuals of all ages to stay active, foster connections, and improve their overall well-being throughout the entire year. Check out our HBMA programs below:
HBMA Learn to Programs
Preschool
This is a program for pre-school children from 3yrs – 6yrs. No previous skating experience is required. This program is designed to introduce skating skills in a fun game-based program. Students will be guided from those first nervous steps on the ice to striding and gliding with confidence. Child must be able to participate independently as parents/caregivers are not permitted on the ice. There will be a 5:1 teacher student ratio.
Preschool 1 – 25 Minute Sessions
Preschool 2 – 50 Minute Sessions (MUST BE ABLE TO GET UP ON THEIR OWN AND SKATE HALF THE WIDTH OF THE ICE INDEPENDENTLY)
Equipment Required:
Hockey/Figure Skates (Velcro/buckle or expandable skates not recommended)
Mittens/Gloves, water resistant pants, warm jacket
CSA approved Hockey Helmet with face cage
Learn to Skate
This is a 6-level progression-based colour coded program. This program will guide skaters through a variety of skills building a solid foundation while having fun and developing balance and coordination. Students will be taught proper technique with a low student/teacher ratio to ensure hands on support and encouragement. Students will be guided from those first nervous steps on the ice to striding and gliding with confidence. During the first couple of classes the skaters will be observed and placed in groups according to ability and skill level.

Hockey/Figure Skates (Velcro/buckle or expandable skates not recommended)
Mittens/Gloves, water resistant pants, warm jacket
CSA approved Hockey Helmet with face cage
Hockey Skating Skills
*Skaters must be able to pass HBMA Learn to Skate level 6 before enrolling in this class
This program is for skaters that are registered in organized hockey/ringette and would like to improve their technical skating skills. This program will be offered to levels from recreational to competitive up to and including AAA hockey players. Students will be placed in groups based on their skill level. Edgework, turns, pivots, weight transfer, stops/starts, acceleration, mohawks, open hip techniques will be many of the components worked on.
50 Min Session – 9 Week Program (8:1 Ratio)
Equipment:
- Full Hockey Equipment/ Hockey Stick
- CSA approved Hockey Helmet with face cage
Learn to Figure Skate
*Skaters must be able to pass the Learn to Skate level 6 before enrolling in this class
Thinking about trying figure skating? Our Learn to Figure Skate program is a great starting point for skaters of all ages. This program is progressive learning program each skater will work at their own pace with the assistance of a qualified skating coach. The classes will focus balance, coordination, edgework and fundamental skating techniques.
50 Min Session – 9 -Week Program (Jan 12- March 15)
- Figure Skates
- CSA approved Helmet with face mask.
Power Skating
This Power Skating program features 50% edge-work training to build balance, control, and power, and 50% hockey-focused skills including acceleration, transitions, and stride efficiency.
50 Min Session – 8 -Week Program (Jan 17- March 15)
Family Day Weekend – NO CLASSES
- Hockey/Figure Skates
- Hockey Equipment optional or Mittens/Gloves, water resistant pants, warm jacket.
- CSA approved Hockey Helmet with face cage
Saturdays 9:00 – 9:50 am
Sundays 9:45 – 10:35 am

Training Pad
HBMA training pad will be a unique add on to any rental. This additional ice surface located beside the south ice pad, can allow for additional goalie training, skill development, and a space for players returning from injury to begin light shooting drills.

Pro Shop
HBMA and Gary Roberts Performance are proud to partner and open a state of the art in arena pro shop, equipped with top-of-the-line skate sharpening equipment to meet the needs of beginners all the way up to the top players in today’s game.

Will Honey and Barry Memorial Arena offer summer camps?
Yes! Our team at HBMA will be offering remarkable hockey camps throughout the summer months. HBMA is also incredibly proud to be partnering with Zach Hyman and host the Hyman Hockey Camp for multiple weeks each summer. What’s the booking process for renting ice or other spaces at your facility?
Please contact our Administration Manager at tjelly@honeybarryarena.com for availability and rates, booking inquiries, and/or any questions you have.
Where can we park when utilizing the arena?
Once construction is complete, there will be ample parking south of the arena, accessible from Marc Santi Blvd. The parking lot has a designated drop-off zone directly in front of the arena’s main entrance.
